Default Gastonia area, NC/Kings Mountain living

My husband and I and our (going to be) 7th, 8th, and 10th graders are going to be moving to the Gastonia area where my husband will be working on the NW side. We want to get away from the "urban"ness of Gastonia and are looking for a smaller town (under 12,000 pop) with good schools, a close-nit community, about a 15 minute drive to work where we could buy at least 15 acres. We are interested in learning more about Kings Mountain or any other areas that might fit what we're looking for.

SE Gastonia is very nice, but Kings Mountain will get you better schools. There is a city & an unincorporated area that are called Kings Mountain. Kings Mountain is in Gaston County & Cleveland County. School districta are by county. I can't say this enough times. Look on the Cleveland County side, for schools.

Please use the search the forum feature to check for threads, but this will get you started. Relocating for job in Kings Mountain Please feel free to ask questions.

Just an FYI, I live in the city in Kings Mountain.

15 minutes as a commute only gives you the choice of Bessemer City or the Gaston side of Kings Mountain Twp, as I don't know where your husband's job is, in relation to 74 or 85.

This site ranks schools. North Carolina State High Schools - NC School Rankings

At the bottom, search for Kings Mountain then Bessemer City. It isn't even a contest.

If you don't find what you want to buy, rent in the city near 74. That will cut down on the commute.

You'll have to ask questions, as you haven't given much information to guess what questions you might have.

He'll be working on the far NW side of Gastonia. I've looked into Maiden and Cherryville, but so far Kings Mountain has the best schools.

We would like to figure out where we want to settle before we buy or rent, while we search to buy, so that our children can start school and stay in the same school system.

Thanks for the link!

You're welcome.

If you rent in Kings Mountain while you look & then buy in Kings Mountain (city or township) it will not have an effect on schools as long as you stay on the Cleveland County side. The oldest will be in the high school & the middle school is next to it, on Pfifer Rd.

What about living on the reservoir? Is that still in the school district? How long does it take to get into town?

Moss Lake? Moss Lake was created on Buffalo Creek, which divides Shelby & Kings Mounain Twp. You'd have to watch school assignments.

Time to town would vary depending on where you are on the lake. Your husband's concern would be time to US 74.

No, the Kings Mountain Reservoir (at least that's what it's called on the map) by Light Oak, toward Shelby.

Moss Lake is the reservoir.

In a few years the city will be making another lake.
