It looks like we will be relocating to Charlotte this summer and were hoping to get a good starting point of reference to narrow down our housing search. We are hoping for a reasonable commute to Tryon/ Tyvola area (30 minutes or less) with excellent schools (up through high school- we do not plan to do private). Housing budget would be from 400 - 450K give or take a little. We have young children and prefer neighborhoods that are family friendly and not cookie cutterish perhaps around 3000 square foot if possible. Any advice would be appreciated as to areas around town that meets these criteria. Thank you in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.

Congrats on the new job

You will have many great options within 30 minutes.

I'd start with Fort Mill, SC but also look at neighborhoods in the South Park area.

I'll send you a few links on direct message to get you started.

Definitely look in Belmont. We moved here 7 years ago for the schools and were not disappointed. My husband works off of Tyvola Rd and it takes him between 15 and 20 minutes MAX to get to work and he never hits traffic. Neighborhoods to look at include Pinsto Forest, Belle Meade, Eagle Park, Glenmere. I'd suggest Hawthorne for its proximity to downtown but there are very few kids in that neighborhood (surprisingly).

Belmont is a great community with lots of family activities throughout the year. They have Friday Night Live every other Friday during the summer where they offer live music and dancing on Main Street, along with food and drink concessions. Everyone brings their kids and it's a lot of fun. They also offer Movies in the Park during the summer where they show family movies under the stars on a big screen in Davis Park (right in downtown). They have mutiple other festivals during the year and a Christmas parade in December where the schools dismiss early so everyone can attend.

The elementary, middle and high schools are wonderful. They are relatively small (high school has about 1200 students) and the teachers and administrators care about the students. Every year the high school wins the most scholarship money in the county. Both our kids graduated from there and are attending UNC Chapel Hill. Routinely, the high school sends between 10 and 15 kinds to UNC CH each year. That's a good statistic for such a small school.

Good luck!

I definitely wouldn't look in Belmont or Fort Mill. If you have that budget and want good schools in Charlotte, look around South Park and South Charlotte. Beverly Woods is an excellent school. Their test scores are as good as private schools and the surrounding neighborhood is very nice and family-friendly. I'd keep my search to within the borders of Park Rd over to Providence Rd and up to Myers Park.

I agree - stay in South Charlotte. You have the budget, schools are excellent and commute will be a cinch. Look at Mountainbrook, Montibello and other areas near South Park Mall. If you are concerned about high school, Myers Park HS is better than South Meck, though both are good schools.

Check Fort Mill and Lake Wylie (Clover Schools). Good school systems and a lower tax rate. Lake Wylie is unincorporated (lowest tax rate) and has a number of communities that meet your needs.

I like ex-burgher's recs a lot. Mountainbrook and Montibello are great neighborhoods. Mountainbrook has a great swim and tennis club that your kids will love. Montibello doesn't have a pool but a lot of residents join Windyrush for swim and tennis in Olde Providence just down Rea Road. Fox Glove and Cottonwood are also beautiful nearby neighborhoods but they're both pretty small and things seem to get snapped up quickly. Chadwyck is another really pretty neighborhood. It's much bigger and I know there are some great listings right now. Nothing in Lake Wylie will meet your commuting needs.

I live in Fort Mill, and really love it - but if I had the budget I would live in the S. Charlotte places mentioned above. But taxes are way lower in SC, and the schools are great in FM.
I work at the same area and it takes me less than 20 minutes to get home.
