Default Employment opportunities in Charlotte?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What a great forum!... and not so surprising to see so many Massachusetts/New England residents considering relocating to NC. We as well have felt the spiraling costs of New England; we’ve decided to take a harder look at relocating to North Carolina.

As the title says, we’re looking for employment opportunity, and have strongly considered the Raleigh or Charlotte area. My wife and I are both educated professionals with solid transferable skills… my wife is a VP of Marketing in commercial Real Estate, I was a Division Sales/Business Development Manager for a specialty manufacturer selling capitol goods into the Bio/Life Science (Microscopy related), Semiconductor, Metrology & Photonics industries. I also have extensive experience selling specialized product direct to DoD/DoE/NASA and DoD/Aerospace contractors. Previous to this experience, I had a sales and management career in the electrical supply industry (Graybar, Westinghouse Electric Supply Corp…).

We have both been browsing the usual fare such as Monster & Hot Jobs, but there seems to be very little opportunity in the professional fields… so a question for you, where are folks looking and finding executive positions in NC?

From what I have heard, the best places to look for employment in Charlotte would be

charlottehelpwanted.com and charlottecareer.com

also the career builder site. Another suggestion go to the Chamber of Commerce for either the city or county you might be interested in (i.e. Charlotte). Look for members/companies that are located there...then go directly to the company website..there are times you will find careers/jobs located on their site that are not listed elsewhere (many times it will list a contact name...try calling directly). Reviewing the companies website also gives you an opportunity to research the company a bit to see if it might be of interest to you. Lastly if you like an area expand your search...say you want to be close to Charlotte, NC yet also look at areas within close proximity (example: York County Chamber of Commerce, SC).

Good luck to you!

Default Do not move until you find employment FIRST!!

Mark - I'm a 21 year executive search/recruiting expert with ownership of a national search firm.

Whatever you do .... DO NOT move to Charlotte UNTIL YOU LINE UP A JOB FIRST.

Every neighborhood down here is chock full of Northeasterners roaming the city for job interviews every day like zombies in the "Night of the Living Dead".

The front page of the Charlotte Observer (last Wed) featured church groups and civic groups that are at MAXIMUM CAPACITY with year-long dummies from the Northeast that moved here thinking it would be "easy" to get re-hired.

I own my own internet-based business (Recruiting is 100% electronic in my case) and thus can live/work anywhere and simply took my company/livlihood with me.

But for those needing a regular job I advise not moving until such is lined up.

Every day the banks are puking out hundreds of layoffs and firings all over the place since the credit/mortgage meltdown.

In my neighborhood there are 3 vacant houses bought by "New Englanders" that were never able to sell and did not plan their move carefully.
