Hubby will be working at the airport in the next few months and we are looking for a safe, quiet small town to live in. We haven't had an opportunity to visit the charlotte area yet but we have been doing some research to narrow it down a little. We liked fort mill area but do not want to locate that close to nuclear power plant. We are not interested in subdivisions or anything with HOA's either. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you need schools? Rent or purchase? What's your budget? How long of a commute?

Although we don't have any kids left at home, schools would play a small role as far as resale. We will rent at first.

Commute time would be 20 - 40 minutes.

Look to rent in SE Gastonia. Look to buy in Belmont & Kings Mountain, on the Cleveland County side (Kings Mountain straddles Cleveland & Gaston Counties)

As the bird flies, none of the small towns west/southwest of Charlotte is really going to be any further away from the Catawba Nuclear plant than the other. You just as soon rule out Clover, Gastonia, Belmont - all the best commutes for your husband outside of Charlotte itself.

You could go north/northwest of Charlotte, but dang, you'll run into the McGuire Nuclear plant on Lake Norman.

I suppose east of the airport is your best bet - a 20 minute commute puts you right in the heart of Charlotte though.

Personally, I'd worry about a lot of other things before I'd worry a second about one of the plants.

Fort Mill is a great little town that you should reconsider

Thanks for the insight everyone. A

@Lovesmountains i have seen lots of your posts and respect your opinion. When we heard of our transfer to the area, we initially chose Fort Mill. It looks like a cute town - at least on the internet. But later discovered the close proximity to the nuclear facility. Ten years ago, we wouldn't have been concerned at all about this, but the world is different now and we all must be concerned with safety issues. Being within the 10- mile danger zone isn't something i can live with.
