Hi. I'm a 26 year old guy moving to Charlotte for culinary school in August from Wilmington, NC. I think Plaza Midwood would be the area I would want to live in and I will be making the four hour drive up there a few times between now and August to stake things out and find an apartment. I would appreciate any information on the location of apartment buildings within the neighborhood or any other suggestions about the neighborhood you might have. I would like to be as close to the intersection of Central & The Plaza as possible but advice in the general area would still be helpful. Thanks.

There aren't a lot of apartments or multiplexes around there, and most of the multis are just scattered through the neighborhood. Because of the scarcity and demand they go quick... You're gonna need a little luck.

You may benefit from contacting a big PM co like Allen Tate or similar.

Two of my friends had good luck driving through the neighborhood looking for 'for rent' signs. One got a little duplex not far from Central & The Plaza, and the other is renting a house. If you have contacts here, you might see if someone's willing to do that for you.

The owner of the duplex said he's only ever had to put up a sign. No other advertising & the place is rented within a couple weeks.

I agree with the "driving around" system of looking in Plaza Midwood. The largest complex is right on The Plaza - although I can't recall the name. I would also expland your search to the Chantilly and Elizabeth Neighborhods (which are adjacent.) There are equally fun places to have a beer in Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood. Elizabeth especially has a lot more rentals than Plaza Midwood. You don't mention what kind of place you are looking for - most of the places you can find in PM and Elizabeth to rent are going to be older, not without their charm, but not "shiny" if you know what I mean. However, on Hawthorne there is a large new apartment complex that has a pool and where I think they have more open floor plans and probably very nice kitchens. I also have several friends who rent in Villa Heights - a more fragile neighborhood on the opposite side from Elizabeth/Chantilly. They really like it but have more tolerance for being "urban pioneers." I know, I know... some folks here are going to steer you away from the Villa Heights (and really anywhere but south-east Charlotte), but to each their own.

I saw some for rent signs in the Chantilly 'hood the other day. It's within walking distance of P'wood - it's off Pecan and Bay/Shenandoah. I agree - you just have to drive around to find something. Louise Ave., Thomas Ave. has multiplex buildings. All through Elizabeth neighborhood on 7th street and all the side streets I see signs. Good luck!

If you can't find a privately owned house or 4-unit building, the two big complexes are Hawthorne Square and Metro 808, but they are rather expensive for the size.
