Welcome to the world of 2012. Vehicle searches and security controls are a part of today's "freedom". You don't like this idea and nor do I. In fact I suspect that very few of us like this one little bit.
There are a large number of people and groups who take extreme veiws and are prepared to also take extreme action. The US has a regrettable history of presidental assaination (4 out of 43 people - Grover Cleveland got elected twice in non-consecutive terms, so 10%). It is not therefore surprising that the security services take what they think is neccessary (we may think otherwise) precautions to protect not just the President but also the whole event and its entourage.
It's only for a week and they may even catch some misguided idiots, ya never know.
Commercial vehicles on Monday and all vehicles in certain areas will have to be subject to searches to drive in certain areas.
What happened to the 4th amendment? Is it suspended during the DNC? Will we have to house secret service agents in our houses next?
I know safety is a big concern but we're talking about the Bill of Rights. I don't like the idea.
Man your comment is silly to me...These types of precautions have taken place for many Presidents and they will continue. The people that are being searched should be thankful they are being searched imo. Have you take a flight in the past few years?
GDCharlotte, the 1% only cares about the Constitution when it affects what THEY want to do. What you want doesn't matter anymore and welcome to the USSA. The really shameful thing about it is the sheep think this is perfectly fine. But then again, this is why they are called sheep.
The Fourth Amendment Protects Us from Unreasonable Search & Seizure.....sometimes.
I see no evidence of probable cause in these types of searches.
The key word is 'unreasonable'. I think it's pretty reasonable to want to protect our city and President during the convention, a high-profile, political event with tons of people in the area.
When the city plans random searches at other places and times, I'd agree with the OP. For this event? I'm glad there's a lot of caution.

(sheep end up on the dinner table)
Please fill us in. What are the NON sheep doing about this great travesty? Whining about something does not equate to "action".
and a friendly reminder - smug and condescending are not attractive traits. They shouldn't make you proud of yourself or patting yourself on the back for some unseen "knowledge"... especially when you're doing nothing different from those you are mocking.
To the OP - They've been doing searches like this with the NYC bridges/tunnels since soon after 9-11.

Indeed. You should re-read your post.
