Default Car taxes

I just got my Union County motor vehicle tax bill, and I believe the taxable values are high for both vehicles. They are higher than the Kelley Blue Book retail value. Anyone know how they come up with this?

Also, this question has probably been asked before, but is there sales tax charged on a new car purchase? What if you buy the car in SC?

If I purchase a new car, when will the property tax be due if I pay the taxes for my current vehicles now? Will I end up paying twice?

You can appeal the assessed valuation on your current vehicle to the county property tax office. Be prepared to submit reasonable documentation to support your case.

No motor vehicle sales tax in NC. State residents pay a 3% Highway Use Tax (HUT) on new purchases to the DMV instead. As a current state resident, the NC DMV will still charge you the HUT to register it even if you buy it in another state.

Your county tax office should sent you a property tax bill on the new purchase within 90 days following the DMV registration.

So do you pay this 3% tax on the purchase price of the new car or can you deduct your trade in from the sales price & then figure the tax?

If the vehicle is purchased from a Dealer or a Leasing Company, the HUT is 3% of the purchase price, less any trade in credit. A bill of sale must accompany each application.
