It should be noted that 4071 of those people came from the annexation that Charlotte completed in June 2011. Not all cities have the power to annex new territory like Charlotte.

True. But I wouldn’t use that as a means to try and discount the growth of the region. The metro area added 80K people over the same period, and was also one of the fastest growing in the country. Report: Charlotte's metro population grows to 1.84 million - Charlotte Business Journal

Okay, so they have Atlanta growing at 3.0 since last year. Remember how they were WAY off with this city and the city only added like 4,000 residents from 2000-2010...We'll see this time around LOL

And that 80K does not include Iredell, Rowan, Lancaster, Cleveland, Stanly, Lincoln, and Chester counties.

What about overall MSA growth? That's a better indicator of % organic growth versus inflated numbers due to annexation, etc. I would be surprised if Charlotte is in the top 50, maybe so.

"The Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, S.C., area was the fastest growing metro in the state, adding more than 86 people during the 12-month period, making it 21st fastest growing metro in the nation." Link: Slideshow: Fastest-growing U.S. metros - Triangle Business Journal

Not the point. What it does mean is that Charlotte gets to count people that other cities can't.

Normally comparisons of the people contained within a city limits is pretty meaningless since these boundaries can easily be changed or not depending upon local laws.

Not true. Your assumption is that Charlotte is the only city that annexes new areas. Other cities do as well. Dallas and Houston are two that come to mind. The fact that of those 19K people, only 4K was because of annexation, I think speaks volumes for how successful the city has still been in attracting new people.
