Hi,

We want to install fence on our yard and was told that we need have the property survey map.

Can anyone tell me where/how I can get it? does Mecklenburg County have it?

Is the property map shown on Mecklenburg County POLARIS system called survey? I doubt since i do not think it contains the house's position on the property:
Mecklenburg County Real Estate System

the deed says a map is recorded in Map Book xxx Page yyy in Mecklenburg County Public Registry. Is the "map" what I need? if so how/where can I access the map?

Or can anyone recommend a decent surveyor in Meck county?

thanks!

If you know a real estate agent, that person could probably give you advice on where to call to get survey. You should get a because you don't want to put your fence on your neighbor's property on right on the line for that matter. We have about a six inch set back on our fence to be on the safe side.

and make sure you call 811 to get all cables and lines, i.e., power, marked before anyone digs. Make sure you use a bonded and insured company to install your fence.

Do you know where the corners of your lot are supposed to be?
Do you know anyone with a metal detector?

After this no cost 30-60 minute exercise to find (and mark!) the iron pins...
you should have a REAL GOOD handle on where your property lines run.

Unless you are really surprised somehow by what you find...
or if your neighbor(ask them over) is surprised or disturbed by what you find...
you can probably "get away" without spending the $2-300 a proper survey will usually cost.

In Winston I could. But any licensed surveyor can do the job and most charge about the same.

Yes. This is the official record of what you own. It will also show all easements. If you know the book and page, you can look at it and get a copy at the Mecklenburg county records office in the downtown area. BTW, if you have your closing papers from when you bought the house, there might be a copy in the litany of documents which they hand to you. You may wish to check these papers first.

I was going to suggest the papers from when you purchased the home also. That's where I would start.

I don't know if it's good enough for a survey but the map/book pages are online or for $1 you can get blueprint sizes from the register of deeds at 720 E. 4th St. To view them online:

1) Go to Welcome - Meck A2 AppSvr 2.8.0
2) Accept the disclaimer
3) Click on Search Real Estate Index
4) Put in the book and page you have.

If your house is older you may have to look it up using the Historical Real Estate Search.

The large printout is pretty cool for only $1.
