Well our relocation plans have gotten a little more complicated. We are selling our house here in SoCal for sure and our escrow closes on 8/10. Given the tight timing before school starts (8/27), we will be coming out, finding a rental, and looking for a home then.
We know we want Union County, and we were looking in areas that feed into Marvin Ridge HS and Weddington HS.
Our goal had been to pick a house in the above areas and then go to that elementary school. Now, we are in the position of selecting a rental and an elementary school, and then a house later, ideally in the same zone as that elem. school, so our kids aren't too disrupted.
We're shooting for Sandy Ridge. We like the homes and subdivisions in this area enough to feel good about that decision. Admittedly, it's a bit random compared to Marvin Elem. and Rea View Elem.
Okay, thanks for being patient...
Two questions:
1) Does anyone know the procedure/costs/things to be aware of for enrolling in a school, when you are renting outside of the area? What if we are renting in Ballantyne (i.e., different districts)? Or renting in Fort Mill (different states)?
2) We like to keep rental costs down ($1,500, ideally less) and so it's tough to find anything in Union County that's close to Sandy Ridge. Can anyone recommend some rental options close to Sandy Ridge? We found Apartments at Blakeley (South Charlotte Apartments | The Apartments at Blakeney Charlotte, NC 28277) and that seems promising. Any opinions?
At any rate, thanks as always for everyone's attention and great advice.

I can only answer #1 but I don't think you can live outside school boundaries and enroll. They will ask for a utility bill or a lease to enroll in the school that your home is zoned for at least that's how it works in Cabarrus County.
Apartments at Blakeney are in Mecklenburg County, so you won't be in the attendance area for Marvin or Weddington (or Cuthbertson, for that matter).
That side of Union County just doesn't have apartment communities like South Charlotte does. Your best bet is to find a real estate agent who specializes in rentals in the area.

Sorry, but you can only enroll in a school your home is assigned to. That means, whatever your temporary rental address is, THAT will determine your school.
The Blakeney apts are great, but they are in Charlotte, so your school assignment would be a south Charlotte school. However, it would be a top rated school!
From their website these are their school assignments:
Hawkridge Elementary
Community House Middle School
Ardrey Kell High School
EXCELLENT schools
