Group health insurance through employers is pretty expensive too. I would advise that you keep the cobra until you enroll in a new plan, otherwise you'll get hit for any preexisting conditions, which could be asthma or allergies, just as an example. I had an awsome plan through United Health Care, and I have several conditions which could be deemed preexisiting.
I paid $900 a month towards my employer sponserd family health insurance. This would be almost $2k cobra because i quit, then the employer told me that I would have to pay up 3 months of insurance to get the cobra. That's $6k, I"m outta work so that's out of the question.
I do know someone who has bcbsnc and they pay $3,000 a month (not specific) and this is for extra maternity coverage. Go and price it up including all the extras deductibles, copays, etc.
