Charlotte could easily increase by 30% by upgrading aircraft easily. As far as movements go, US keeps adding as much as clt expands. The CEO said Charlotte was the best hub.
CLT would lose some Latin American flight but would make up for it in other cities such as OKC that CLT would gain. Think... A seasonal 5 weekly to a Latin American destination versus probably 3 or so flights to OKC and other smaller cities. It's a net gain for CLT.
And Tokyo will never have a direct flight to CLT... Not with JFK, ORD, PHL, above it...
I could see the entire airline operating with just NY/Philly, Miami & Chicago. USA & AA operations in DC would be combined and reduced. Charlotte becomes a regional hub since it does not have a large amount of O&D traffic.

None of those other hubs can do what Charlotte does... It already is a regional hub in the middle of the largest traffic flows... None of them come close to what clt does plus Charlotte is much, much, much cheaper to operate out of...
Nashville to Roanoke. Atlanta to Raleigh. Etc. etc. Charlotte will stay the same or grow. Phoenix is the one to watch for.

USAir's most profitable hub is CLT.....Parker has already stated that Dallas, Chicago, and Charlotte overlap a lot of central US, so it would make sense to reduce some of the flights out of Dallas and Chicago. Also, American does not have a true east coast hub. Miami and NY are at the extreme ends of the east coast while Charlotte is central. Charlotte also has tons of land to expand while NY, Miami, and Philly are stuck....I expect Philly would lose flights to NY due to proximity. Charlotte may pick up a couple of more Eupope or Latin American flights, but the growth would probably be more domestically.

That and there are dozens of cities such as myrtle beach that have nearly 10 daily flights from Charlotte. You will never see anywhere near 10 flights out of small southern cities from those other hubs.
JFK is already a small hub for AMR, slot constrained and competition is fierce (us airways abandoned LGA in favor of DCA)
My bet is that JFK loses tO PHL (us has around 500 daily flights a PHL. AMR has ~150 flights out of JFK). PHL is huge with limited competition.
I'm not sure what it means to be a profitable hub. A hub is a place for the airline to exchange passengers between planes. CLT may be the low cost for operations but of the list above, it's also in the smallest metro, by far. This means planes are in the air longer which negates the advantage. Profit of the airline is determined by overall cost.
I'm not sure why it makes sense to move flights from Dallas to Charlotte. It's more than 3 hours flight time away and they don't have many hubs, relatively speaking outside of the east coast.
I do see Miami growing as it is in a strategic location and all the flights from CLT to South America can be moved there. It's also in a good location to serve much of the South East not to mention South Fla being a huge destination and metro of 6M+.
IMO, CLT is the most redundant of the hubs in the East.

Yeah, Miami is Much better suited to serve the Southeast than Charlotte
Miami
JFK
ORD
DFW
Charlotte is vastly superior.... For NorthEastern/Southeastern flows.... American doesn't even fly to Asheville or Myrtle Beach... US Airways from Charlotte alone has probably ~13 flights between the 2 cities....
The Latin America service CLT is a drop in the bucket. At most Once Daily, sometimes seasonal and 3 weekly...

I predict CLT gains flights to Legacy AMR cities such as Monroe, LA, Evansville IL, Shreveport, etc. In fact, the CEO said expect CLT to gain flights to smaller cities this last call where he called CLT the best hub. I also would not hold my breathe to keep Rio D. and would kiss Sao Paulo good bye.
