The granite marker honoring 10 black men, including nine slaves, is believed to be one of the first of its kind in the country. The marker will go in a brick walkway at the Old County Courthouse in Monroe, in front of a Civil War monument.

The ceremony of the new marker is tentatively set for Dec. 8

What kind of flag will they use by their markers? They were Confederates. And, please don't tell the NAACP, Al Sharpton will screw everything up. LOL!

I would guess that the NC flag would work just fine. All volunteer regiments on both sides belonged to a state.

The thing is they fought for the south. There are some blacks that support the confederate flag as their ancestors were part of that war. But, I agree that the state flag would work fine since back in those days, the state was more powerful and enjoyed more soverignty.

In that particular war, local identity ruled. The majority of soldiers belonged to the 26th North Carolina, the 30th Indiana, etc., etc., etc. There's a book that examined the role of local identity in the Army of the Ohio, later the Army of the Cumberland. That can be extended to all of the armies on both sides.

I'm glad that they're being honored, but it is a bit distasteful to call them Confederates. They were slaves with no choice in the matter. That they finally were paid a pittance 50 years later (would have to assume most had died by then) just shows you what the white Confederates thought of them during their lives.
