I don't agree - this is the National Convention, not flying in to throw out the 1st pitch at a ball game or speak at a fundraiser. I understand you contend it isn't necessary to have a significant uptick in security and I respect that. I do have a clue about what you've posted... you seem to think all the security is to "sterilize" and "suppress". Your right to assemble is being infringed on. The govt is overstepping. You feel this is an outrage and outright abuse of power. We're a bunch of sheep incapable of critical thinking to see this happening right in front of our faces.

Did I miss anything?

Does anyone really think that there will be NO protesters / protesting at the DNC in Uptown? I don't.

I had to show my drivers license at a checkpoint Uptown on Sunday.

James, if you are thinking about setting up a blog, you can do one here on C-D or through wordpress or google's blogger - very easy to do if you haven't tried it before.

If you post stuff here, I know we would all enjoy seeing things unfold as we prepare for this huge national event.

It may be Sunny could take your photos and put them into another thread . . . since we have talked about starting a thread dedicated to the DNC. It is very kind of you to take the time to share this with those of us who aren't willing to venture uptown and see for ourselves, lol.

Oh wow. I had no idea they were already screening folks. I am relieved to hear it, though. Call me simple-minded but it makes me feel secure to know everything possible is being done to assure public safety.

Oh. Does anyone know if there are some types of regs in place about taking photos of various buildings - like how many feet away you have to be, etc? Seems we had a discussion about this (some homeland security reg) several years ago?

Exactly my thoughts

@Ani: Probably

Everything is suspicious behavior. Everyone likes to "feel" safe but pointless checkpoints on a Sunday don't keep someone from lighting up the Epicentre with an M249 three blocks away.

Oh noes!!!

My parents went into E Germany in the late 70s. Very scary stuff. They even took these huge mirrors and ran them under the tour bus at the border. Searched everyone. Isolated the whole group of tourists for hours b/c they found a magazine on the bus, wh/ was considered some type of contraband. Gives me the willies to even think about those days.

Well they're coming back.

Off-topic but even the Social Security Admin. is preparing for some kind of civil unrest. They purchased 174,000 rounds of hollow point ammunition this week.

The future looks fantastic!

this article in Popular Mechanics, which is in reference to photographers and their rights, discusses this issue. The author says there is nothing in the Homeland Security Act which prohibits photographs of anything but that local security and police nevertheless have stopped people from taking particular photographs in many places across the country.
