Despite there being 4000 police in the city for this event there was a gun battle related to drugs on Charlotte streets where a one Zachary Jamal Pittman was shot dead. I guess the DNC dragnet didn't apply to anywhere else in the city. The gun battle occurred yesterday evening during the convention about 4 miles from the arena.

4000 police, most likely getting paid OT is a a flabbergasting number and I assume at the expense of the beleaguered taxpayer. It's a case of spare no expense because the people making the decisions, don't have to worry about paying the bills. The only thing I see these multiple phalanxes of officers accomplishing was to prevent a small hand full of protesters from exercising their civil rights. As the above demonstrates, it did nothing for the vast majority of the city. I guess they had plenty of time to do some dancing in the streets as demonstrated by that other topic here. Meanwhile people have having to dodge bullets.

Try 12 miles from the arena.

Drug deal led to Wednesday killing, police say

So the police shouldn't be allowed to search your box truck within blocks of the President and other high-ranking officials, but at the same time they should be able to prevent all crime within the city limits?

4.4 miles as the crow flies.

Police have the right to perform a search where they have a reasonable belief that a crime has been or will be committed by the individual and the court has given them a warrant. Maybe you should have stayed away during Jr. High social studies.

I have a question. Now that the DNC is over, will the police continue to enforce bans against backpacks/purses, water bottles and walking one's dog in the downtown area of Charlotte? I read that there is no sunset clause in the new ordinance.

Any links for reference and then perhaps someone will be able to answer your question. I will see if I can find a link, too.
