We're looking to remodel our bathrooms but want to do some of the grunt work ourselves to save money. Anyone have experience working with contractors in this manner? I suppose we could just do the tile removal ourselves, then get quotes. But would that save us? Any thoughts?

You'll need to call around and ask. I don't know of any off the top of my head. Just have a couple contractors come out and get prices both ways. Lots of them are hurting for work and will be more willing to accomodate you.

find someone with the skills and work a deal to pay them hourly... what exactly do you want to do yourself? Paint? tile? etc?

I would not pay hourly for remodel work, get a price for what ever job you have for them. Then get at least another 2 more quotes. Ask for references (and check them).
Then go with the one you feel most confident with, price should be secondary.

I am going to repeat what has now become my mantra: Let NOBODY in or around your house that does not have the proper licenses, insurance, certifications, etc. research whether or not you need a permit (if the work is over $5K, you do) get copies upfront. Trust nobody to know (or to have) these things. You will pay more, but, you will not regret it later.

(like I have)

Did you read the part about where he wants to help them with the job?

We feel we can do the tiling and painting, but definitely need someone to remove shower pan, construct new shower floor and walls (as I believe they are damaged from leakage), and possible mold remediation.

Don't mess with mold. If you think you have it, you don't want anything to do with it. Well, unless you want to spread it inadvertently. You do have to get all of the debris out of the house, ya know. If you hire a reputable company, you may lose any warranty or guarantee if you try to help.

Old sign on a wall reads; Labor $25/hour, $35/hour if you watch, $50/hour if you help.

Anyone can paint. I'd say tackle that on your own. Do you KNOW you can handle the tile? Not think. Got a tile saw? Ever used one? Going to a 30-minute clinic at Home Depot does not a tile man make. Think long and hard before you get in over your head. Its easy to do. And expensive to fix.

I'm saying t!his based on what I read. A homeowner who wants a remodel on a budget and is William g to work but will be learning along the way.

PS. Don't think its always as easy as that handsome/pretty HGTV host says it is.
