Unfortunately due to a job change I have to leave south Charlotte and move up to the University area. I have always found south Charlotte (Ballentyne area) to be a very safe place for a young, single, professional woman in her late 20s. I am a little concerned about what I read on other posts about the crime in the University area. Is the University area a safe place for a single, young professional like myself to live? I would love to stay where I am and commute, but it would be over an hour each way with traffic. I am concidering renting around Mallard Creek Road/Mallard Creek Church Road. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Crime in the University area isnt as rampant as some make it out to be. Sure, an area that has students and alot of rentals is going to attract some undesireables. Focus your search on the Mallard Creek Rd. area. I would try to stay north of WT Harris Blvd (24), and a good distance from the UNCC campus. I am not saying that the UNCC campus area is rough, but the quality of life diminishes the closer you get to any college campus. I think as you get closer to the Sugar Creek Rd. area it can get a little dangerous. Yes, plenty of luxury apartment to choose from off Mallard Creek.

I hadn't been to the University area for a while until my husband and I went to University Place for dinner last night - a Saturday night. I was thrilled with what I found. The place was so lively - not only with students, but also with middle aged and older folks. Of course, there were many young people having a good time but no rowdiness. "Lively" and "energetic" are the words that come to mind. Furthermore, I saw the diversity that one sees nowhere else in Charlotte - people of every hue and ethnicity. I think that when you move up there you will see a much more interesting part of Charlotte than you are used to in Ballantyne. Good luck with your move.

Hi!
Just a couple of questions- what size apt. are you looking for, and how much are you willing to spend? apartmentratings.com is a great site to look to see what people have to say about the different apts. If you p.m. me, I will give you some info. on the complex I live in, right in the area you are talking about. Good luck! |

Hello,
I am actually a current student at UNCC (and also in my mid-20's) and can personally say that though there is some crime around the campus (typical of being near a college) overall the area is extremely safe (much better than most parts of Charlotte- and I can say this since I am a Native to the area). There is a lot of extra security around the campus entertainment spots, and the majority of the neighborhoods and apartments make extra lengths for security. There are several new apartments on Mallard Creek Church Rd. and Mallard Creek Rd. Also Prosperity Church Rd offers the more quite familiy type neighborhoods. There is also a division called Davis Lake on West Harris going towards Old Statesville Rd. This is a beautiful division. However in this division stick to homes not apartments (the apartments are old). There are several great restaurants with a more "grown up" appeal to them in the area. If you are a fan of beer, then the Flying Saucer would interest you. There are many people there ranging from 25-40+ during the week. They offer a membership called the "beer of the month" club. My parents (both high professionals) really enjoyed this place. There are also several bistros and sushi places on the "Boardwalk" which is off of J.W. Clay Blvd. There is also North Lake Mall now that offers many many new restaurants and bistros as well (such as PF Chang's). There are a couple of good places near Concord Mills. If you want a night in, yet you don't feel like cooking....because you are in a college area...there is a grand assortment of delivery places that will deliver late into the night. Everything from Chinese, salads, burgers and chicken any way you want it (all at Wing Zone) to Italian (real Italian from Amalfi's), subs (U.S. Subs) and Topper's Pizza (not your odinary pizza parlor....I recommend the Patatoe Skin pizza!). Also, UNCC is a hop skip and a jump from the Lake and Downtown. Also, 485 will take you anywhere now from UNCC. If you ever want any more information about the area just get a hold of me and I will be glad to help! |
