Hey all,
My wife and I are heading to Cherokee in a few weeks to celebrate her birthday. We are very excited about visiting the Great Smokies area, as well as the casino. I know, I have heard the casino has a little to be desired. What is the quickest and most scenic drive to get us there from Charlotte? I think we will be in the mood to do some "leef-peeping." My friend said 85 to 26 to 40. We have been to the Asheville area before, but it seems like 74 can be stop and go. I appreciate the feedback..

You could try 85 to 321 to 40.

Non-rush-hour: I-85, 74, I-26, I-40
Rush-hour: 85, 26, 40

I was just there this weekend...I went 85s to 321n to 40w to 19s. It was a very vice ride on 19 through Maggie Valley. The are many quaint little shops through the valley that I am sure your wife will love. There are also a few pull offs for some really amazing pictures. I hope you both have a wonderful time!

Well, our plan is to leave CLT on a Satruday morning at 8am. As far as 321 goes, isnt there construction going on? It just seems, according to Mapquest, that the 321-40 way seems a little out of the way. I guess we cant go wrong either way...

Not sure about construction since I haven't been on 321 since August but I used to go to school near the casino (W. Carolina Univ.) & for the last year or two I was going there I would take 321. For some reason it seemed faster....not sure why, but it did. I stopped taking 74 after about 6 months. I was tired of the traffic & the lights. 85, 26, 40 is a good way to go as well.

The construction on 321 is north of I40, you should be fine going that way from 85 and then getting on I40.

The contsruction is right when you get onto 321 from 85. It is about 100 feet long and was no problem to get through it at all. There are 2 or 3 traffic lights when you get onto 321 then it is open highway. It is a much better route than 74 with lights all over.

If you have the time ... try this ... using an atlas so you can find the scenice country roads ...

meander across SC over to York, then Hickory Grove, Pacolet Mills ...

use an atlas to help you find a scenic road paralleling main roads ... 11 could be a great choice

you can't go wrong heading N up SC28 (from Seneca/Walhalla, SC) towards Georgia then into NC - you'll wind up in Highlands - then you can take 64 (the Cullasaja Gorge Road) to Franklin, get on 28 N and enjoy the ride to Cherokee

As you head N on 28 about 11 miles out of Franklin, pass Oak Grove Chapel Road, wave at my cabin, Sit a Spell, tucked back in Lakey Creek Drive

i know the back roads pretty well but don't have an atlas with me right now, let me know if you have any questions!

"the journey is as important as the destination"
