It's a sham I tell you.....I've never worked for a place where the bosses come to the office while the assistants work from home....every single day. Cmon people.!!!Whats wrong with that picture? Excuse the rant, but it makes it that much hard to get work done when you have to communciate with people who work from home. I know, I know..."its not everybody, but it just seems like its the few that I work with. Sometimes you can send a request at 8am in the morning and they don't acknowledge until 1pm or 2pm in the afternnoon...or never be online when you need them to be... Some of the workers are getting over...i tell you.

I hope you feel a wee bit better after your post and I wish you a much better and less frustrating afternoon, an even better Friday and a spectacular weekend.

So if you had the option you would turn it down? I work from home once or twice a week, but it is agreed I am available immediately if called upon.
It is one of my favorite perks of a job.

If you're the boss you need to make those employees aware of what you expect of them. If you want email responses within a certain time frame, tell them. If you need them to be on call for you for their entire work day, tell them. Tell them that if their work output or efficiency decreases because they're not onsite, they will need to be onsite going forward.

Working from home is a huge perk for most people. If that causes problems for the rest of the staff, it needs to be addressed.

Perhaps the reason they do not respond quickly is you are not the only one asking them for things. I doubt it has anything to do with WFH as much as the incredible workload. Sounds to me like a specific person or persons. When I was at BAC I was so busy fighting fires it did not matter where I was.

Working from home is not the problem. You either have a lousy employee in general (or they don't respect your requests)...or even a third scenerio if its a one time thing, they might be super swamped...

which is it?

I've been wondering when the city leaders will realize how much work-from-home is transforming the uptown corps. They don't need expensive office buildings to maintain and pay taxes on, pay lighting/heating/cooling etc ... when employees will pay for all that at their own house.

1. Are the people you are calling in the same time zone where you are? Your 8 am may be their 5 am.
2. Assistants don't have to be in the same city as their bosses. While many bosses work in Uptown, their assistants or entire team for that matter are in another location which could be in another state, thus they work from home.
3. Did you check their calendar to see if they are in meetings all day? Tip: Draft an invite to the person you are calling, check availability in Outlook. They may be at meetings and cannot respond within the time frame you expect.
4. Like another poster said, if your request is urgent, flag it Urgent, include a date/time to respond by, send your e-mail with a Read Receipt. At least you'd know whether they have read the e-mail or not.
5. Just because people don't sign on to Communicator doesn't mean they are not working. It could mean they don't want that thing popping up every 5 minutes even when marked In A Meeting.
