I knew when I first moved here I use to see Hot Air Balloons all the time over Lake Norman but over the years I have yet to cross a balloon shop (assuming they operate out of a buisness location).

I would like to take my pookie on a balloon ride for our anniversary but is there any local or do I need to head to hickory or out east?

I haven't seen a hot air balloon over Charlotte in YEARS. They used to take off from the park area near Raintree about 10 or 15yrs ago. We had a couple land in our neighborhood, one guy was proposing to his girlfriend.

There are no "balloon shops," most pilots operate out of their homes and do it part-time. But there is a balloon factory in Statesville...Firefly Balloons at www.fireflyballoons.net...they (broken link) could point you to some local commercial pilots. You can also contact the Balloon Federation of America at Balloon Federation of America - Home.

There is also a monument commemorating hot air ballooning in the area. It's located in the parking lot of the shopping center where JR's is in Statesville. The marker is on the I-77 edge of the lot between Village Inn Pizza and what used to be the Fairfield Inn motel. I stumbled on it last year while killing time before an appointment.

HotAirAdsNC.com

Here is a Winston-Salem based company that does Balloon rides across NC. The owner is a pilot for US Air as well as an avid skydiver.
