There are LOTS of threads out here that will give you a lot of perspective.
BUT, agree that you should come here as often as you can, read the papers, read the crime stats, etc....and, of course, have a job lined up...before you come.
The biggest thing keeping me from relocating AWAY from Charlotte is the weather...
Please DON'T move here if you think a PLACE will solve your problems.
Your problems will follow you.
Really?
In my former home, I had a problem with obnoxious people that used to honk as soon as the light turned green; muscle their way through shopping plazas, etc.
We are considering a move to Union County or Davidson...however I must admit Charlottes crime stats are a bit unnerving.
If you're worried about Charlotte, then I would suggest not ever visiting some of the smaller major cities in NC. With the exception of Raleigh, Charlotte has less crime than Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Fayetteville, Durham, Asheville, and Wilmington.

^^^ And when you look at the crime rates of smaller towns such as Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowedHickory and Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowedRocky Mount, I often question why our transplants are so "concerned" with Charlotte's rate. In NC, being the "biggest" does not equal to being the "most unsafe". FWIW, the Union county town of Monroe has a higher crime rate than Charlotte.

^^^Clearly, Charlotte and Raleigh benefit greatly from attracting a rather large number of educated transplants. Raleigh has the highest percentage of transplant growth while Charlotte has the second highest percentage. The crime rates of both show an interesting trend. Where educated transplants tend to move, crime rates in NC drop. The areas of NC that educated transplants avoid tend to have higher crime rates and more poverty. Here's another stat that might surprise you (and many others). Uptown Charlotte (the most urban part of Charlotte by far) has less crime than many low density areas of town with large back yards. Yet we still have many folks who seem to think that "my own yard" equals "safety". This might be the case in a suburb of Boston, but it just doesn't work that way here in NC. Some of the most country-looking towns can be the most wicked places you've ever seen (no offense to Wadesboro and Kinston).
The weather was one of the initial reasons I didn't want to COME to Charlotte.....the winter is fine, but the summers......whew.....I hate the extreme heat and humidity. But I moved here from SoCal, so it is all in your perspective.
