We are seeking a neighborhood in Mecklenberg or Union county where children play outside with their neighbors kids. Do these still exist? Thank you!

I don't know any mothers that allow their children to play outside unattended. Now, they play in backyards.

But I know moms in Mooresville, Huntersville, Charlotte . . . and none of them allow their children to play outside UNATTENDED.

Over age 13, yes, maybe some moms let their kids ride bikes to friends' houses in the neighborhood, but I do not know anyone who allows their kids to roam around and play outside unattended by a parent.

I missed the unattended part from the OP and didn't take it that way. I took it literally and my neighborhood (and others I go to in the area) always have kids outside playing together... Parents are always around - outside cleaning up, yard work, BSing / socializing, etc.

To your point though, I'm talking in sight of the house and 1 or 2 houses down. Not blocks away alone and unattended - I don't think any reasonable person does that in this day and age. Which makes me very sad considering I used to do that all the time as a kid myself. Boy, how things have changed.

Yes, now we are definitely on the same page.

Kids are out and about in their yards, their neighbors' yards or perhaps even riding bikes or shooting basketballs with parents there.

None unattended.

Your neighborhood sounds like all the others I am familiar with, where my family and friends live and have children out and about.

It is sad, Mikey. When I was a kid, we literally rode several miles on our bikes, often in groups. We started out in the morning and didn't come back til supper - going from one house to another, maybe somewhere to play baseball, maybe to the local gas station for a snack . . . someone's backyard to put the sprinkler on and get wet (in our regular clothes, lol).

BY the time I had my son in 1983, things were changing. I was able to let my son ride his bike to specific neighbors' houses, and he would call as soon as he got there. THe world just changed and we moms had to change how we handled play time.

And of course - video games! That meant at least we knew when our kids were visiting back and forth and playing vid games - they were inside the house with adult supervision.

Now, so many kids have scheduled activities after school . . . there are often no kids playing between houses many afternoons simply b/c everyone is at some sports or cheerleading or dance or gymnastics, etc. class.

Find a neighborhood where the homes don't have air conditioning.

Kids are getting kidnapped left and right. That young girl on her bike got killed by those boys for her bike. It's a horrible world out there. Sadly I will not let my kids play outside alone.

I agree, there was at least 4 different child kidnappings yesterday, and 51 total in the past week. When it's happening left and right like this, you just keep them inside until they are 18, or later should they decide to never move out.
