Hello folks,

I just bought a foreclosed split level that needs 14 squares of siding. Right now there is old hardboard siding on it. Some of it is broken and rotted looking. The wood around the windows is pretty bad too. I've had a few people look at it. The contractor from Lowes said his people would put the siding over the hardboard and wrap the windows for $6800. Another guy who is a master carpenter said he recommends removing all of the existing siding to ensure that the exterior sheathing is in good shape, wrapping the house in Tyvek and then installing the siding/wrapping windows. He said it would be $1150 plus $350 to install the Tyvek so $1500 plus the cost of materials (about $1700 he estimated). Does this sound like a good price?

Anyone have any recommendations for good but inexpensive siding installers? I would like to get someone that does good work.

Also, would it be better to remove the old siding or to just put the new siding over it?

Edit: advice on what kind of siding/wrap/insulation too.

Any other advice/tips pertaining to getting the job done are surely welcomed.

Are you sure it's hardboard? Reason I asked is that I have renovated a few house that what looks like hardboard was really asbestos shingles. Real old stuff. Reason to do new work over it is so that you don't get hassled by a city agency over removal.

Get another quote from someone for the total job.... What type of siding is in the 6800 quote? I agree to remove the old siding. In addition to inspecting the sheathing, I believe that you will end up with a better overall siding job.. I would strongly urge you to find a non box store contractor...

You might can tell from these pics - I'm new to siding. Inspection report calls it composite board.

So what do you think about the guy that said $1500? He said he would throw in installation of two replacement windows for that price. It includes removing old siding, wrapping with Tyvek, wrapping windows and installing siding.

The $6800 quote is for 5" "Shadow Ridge" 0.042" - is this stuff any good?

I would give Crown Builders on Monroe Road a call. They don't advertise, but we have used them for a complete siding wrap. They beat the second lowest bid (of three) by 20 percent. They did our roof and came in considerably lower than we had expected. Inspection and estimate will not cost you anything and they give good advice (actually saved us money)

So the $1500 includes installation of the new siding as well? Are you providing the materials? I have not heard of "Shadow Ridge"... I would use Certainteed Mainstreet... Buy from a supply house (Best Distributing, Norandex, Lyftime, Ted Lansing, ABC, etc...) Better selection and ask them if they know of any installers that they would recommend. Do not use an installer who wants money up front. RED FLAG!!

The price does not sound bad for labor... I would suggest that you go ahead and do the boxing as well. (The fascia and overhangs).
