My son is currently in 4th grade at a small private school. He was recently diagnosed as gifted but with dyslexia and dysgraphia. His current school is OK for now and probably for 5th grade but after meeting with the school, his doctor is recommending we look into charter schools as they will have a private school atmosphere but will legally have to provide the accommodations he needs.

She is not recommending The Fletcher School as she thinks it would be too remedial.

Can anyone please tell me how we begin applying to charter schools and how the whole process works?

We currently live in Iredell Co. but could move anywhere within commuting distance of Huntersville.

Thanks in advance.

You are right to begin looking into them now.

Entrance to Charter Schools is by lottery, with LONG waiting lists. Applications are taken at the beginning of the year (Jaunuary-February) with the lottery being in March.

However, each Charter School ~IS~ different and, as you probably researched your private school, you will want to do the same with the Charters that you apply to.

Pine Lake Prep is a good one to investigate.
