Hi there
After a whirlwind visit this weekend, we really liked what we saw. It took 10 hours to drive from NY over night. But we loved Charlotte ; it is so clean, the tree lined streets are very nice, lots of people walking around. Honestly, we were impressed. We visited Birkdale on Friday night ; listened to the street music. We went out on Lake Norman with friends on Saturday ; boy is it huge.

We visited a school that our boys would go to ; oh my gosh, it was so clean, the kids were so quiet learning there, they were so quiet walking from class to class.

So we reserved a site and hope to start building within a month. It will take approx 10 months to finish everything, but thats our time frame anyhow. We will be living in Denver which is rural, but very nice. Dh can get a job with his company.
Are we crazy ; probably. But it just feels right.
the North Carolina people should be very proud that they have such a clean state. I was very impressed.
Thanks
dorothy

Did you see the entire state, or just Charlotte?

You are a bit crazy, unless you first do the math before you move.

Good luck.

We jsut saw the Charlotte area. Maybe we are a bit crazy, but after living on Long island for 20 years, we are tired. Financially its a good move, its also time for us to move to a slower pace of life. A better education for our children, A better social life for them ; right now, they have no friends where we live as they are the only children here that go to a certain school.
This Morning my 6 year old asked if we could move to NC so he could go to school with our friends that are moving down in a month.

I agree it may not be the panecia that we are looking for, but it comes close to it.

okaydorothy -
Congratulations on making the decision to move.

I'm curious about which development in Denver you reserved a homesite?

Given the market conditions, were the builders giving any incentive packages? (Like throwing in $12k worth of "upgrades") or something like that?

Don't be so sure on the "better education" front. I imagine if you were to honestly compare schools, the Long Island schools would be more highly rated then the NC ones. Not trying to dissuade you, but I moved from the midwest to NC and it basically put my son back a year. He basically had to repeat a grade since the things he was taught during the school year after we moved were the same things he learned in Minnesota the year before. He got very bored. The schools here are just not as good as they are, in general, in the northeast and upper midwest.

The best way to see if the schools in the area of NC are in compared to where you are coming from is to look at the cirriculum and see what they are going to be taught in a certain grade in nc compared to your home state.

I have heard in some areas of NC, comparing LI to NC, that they are a yr behind but keep in mind that they have to catch up by HS, as all kids across the country take the SAT's and are competing against the same colleges so they need to be somewhat on a level playing field.

as for schools ; the boys right now go to catholic school. Yes, that seems to be a year ahead of the public school here on Long Island, but there is nobody in our neighbourhood that goes to that school. From viewing the pupils in the schools, they seemed to be very well mannered, friendly, listened to the teacher, and the administration seemed friendly. There were no locks on the doors, no id was asked for, and in general seemed a safe place to be.
As for the development ; we retained a site in Killians Crossing. There wasnt really very many "free" upgrades, just a small incentive on the closing. We just liked the homes and also our friends are moving there in a few weeks.
Considering the prices there, compared to the same size, quality here ; here it would cost double.
We have been in the rat race for way to long and its time to try to chill and enjoy life a little more.

Dorothy,

Wishing your family much luck and happiness. Sounds like a great move for you and your family.

You must really be psyched about having friends who will be in the same development.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Sincerely,

SL

I don't think you are crazy, when I moved to AZ I never visited first at all and I've been here for 18 years. I am now moving to the Lake Norman area and I reserved my lot after a weekend visit too.

I wish you the best of luck!!!!

P.S. I love Birkdale and Lake Norman too
