I have a boy eight year old in Cms school.

Just wondering when do they start sex ed.

I also want to know from parent on how to handle this topic in general since he has asked questions like "how is HIV spread?"

Looks like they start it in the 5th grade. Here's a link to dig into:

Reproductive Health and Safety Education (RHASE)

The first document on this webpage outline the curriculum which occurs in 5th grade:
Reproductive Health and Safety Education (RHASE)

Every parent is different. I tried to be as honest and open as possible with my kids and not make a big deal about it.

IMO, the CMS sex education is terrible. It is abstinance-based (by state law) and very little info is given about contraception at any time.

Here's a wild thought-no sex ed in schools. Give the parents the curriculum, then test the kids on it. Parents should be teaching their kids about sex. The technical info is limited so I would think any parent should be able to handle it.

Thoughts?

Multiple sexual partners is something that is excepted that has not served the better good. Kid have to learn things like loyalty...dedication and love. Sex education should be about plumbing..the mechanics of sex. Recreational sex should be show for what it is...something that can cause emotional damage...spreading of disease and a general state of confusion in youth.

How about testing the parents?

You're putting a lot of faith in people who may have no desire to do so for whatever reasons. I'm 30, and we have sex ed in 6th grade. It went far beyond sex in and of itsself, and was more focused on learning about the different parts of men and women, what they did and what they were there for, and how human reproduction worked. It was never anything like "this is how you do or do not have sex, what you should use, why you should go to hell if you do it, ect ect. I have no problem with that, and while I cannot speak for other schools, I would imagine they do it the same way.

So the cms ed is more about anatomy rather than dos and donts?

The lessons are at http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartme...Feb%202012.pdf which freakishly is 69 pages long.
