Another vote for Belmont, here. It's adorable and affordable and an easy commute.

Hello Beau.. exohioan (Cincinnati-Walnut Hills-go eagles) The towns mentioned are very nice. BUt on the other side of Charlotte are some very nice small towns. Harrisburg has a population of about 4,000. Very nice shops, close to uptown, lower taxes, great schools, very little crime. Compares favorably with Cincinnati surburbs like loveland, Maderia, Kennedy Heights

Try Mount Pleasant, it's out in the country in Cabarrus County. Cornelius and Davidson are great and on the lake in North Mecklenburg. Fort Mill and Rock Hill are south of the border in SC and are very nice towns and growing. You might also try Weddington, Marvin, and Waxhaw in Union County, which is probably the prettiest county of them all.

Default thanks...

My wife will be working in the southern side of Charlotte. How do the travel times change from different ends of town? I have to say, we are looking for the smaller towns. Need to rent first for a year or two just so we can get there and really decide for our self what we like. We figure if we can find a smaller town that has good schools and a respectable travel time to the south side of Charlotte then we will be ahead of the game. Keep the responses coming. I keep researching everything everybody has posted and I want to tell you over and over, thank you for your help! We are moving to the Charlotte area all the way from Phoenix Arizona. It's to damn hot here! Plus, we simply miss all of the beauty of the trees, grass and flowers.

For a south Charlotte commute, I definitely wouldn't recommend anything on the northern side of Charlotte (Davidson, Harrisburg, Cabarrus County). Look in Union County or Fort Mill. Also some parts of Gaston County aren't a bad commute on I-485 - Belmont, Mount Holly, Cramerton, and McAdenville.

I agree with CharlotteNC if you are looking to be commutable to south Charlotte. To reiterate, Belmont, Mount Holly, etc won't be a bad commute at all since she will be driving against the flow of traffic on 485. This part of 485 is the worst, but like I said, it will be a breeze in the opposite direction.

Of course, Waxhaw, etc puts you south of Charlotte in Union County and would also be a pretty easy commute.

I'll go ahead and throw in Pineville with Rock Hill and Fort Mill, although Pineville's identity often gets lumped in with Charlotte.

So, in summary, now that I know where she needs to commute, I say definitely check out and visit any of the following towns: Weddington, Waxhaw, Marvin, Mount Holly, Belmont, Mcadenville, Lowell, Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Pineville (Pineville's a stretch but I throw it in there because of the location).

If you look at the multiple listing of Union County, anything in the most Southwest corner will be close to South Charlotte. I was recently curious and looked at the homes for sale in this area and they were numerous and a variety of prices. The Fort Mill and Tega Cay areas look good to me also. If you look into any of the major real estate companies, you will find a link to the mutiple listings.

I just went back and looked at the multiple listings and realized that if it were me looking for a home in this area of zip code 28173, I would be immediately thinking that I could not afford this area. Just be patient and go down the pages and you will find some homes that are not a million dollars. This is a mixed area with a lot of newer higher priced homes and a lot of older less pricey homes. I would say that there is probably something in this area for anyone.

I agree that Harrisburg in Cabarrus County is a great place. Also try Concord. That's where I "threw a dart at the map" and chose to move to 2 years ago. It's a great town with "family" feel. I was on the far side of Concord where rt601 and rt49 come togehter. It took me a little over 30 minutes to get to uptown Charlotte.

I also will put in a plug for Union County. Lived here over 7 years. I work in Ballantyne in South Charlotte on the other side of 485 on Johnston Rd. (521) and can get to work in 15-20 minutes without getting on either of these Highways-using back roads. You get the "rural" feel here in varying degrees as it is developing quickly. Hey we even have something other than a Harris Teeter (Grocery chain) or CVS (Drugstore) coming in. Seriously, there are two growing Shopping Centers-Village of Wesley Chapel and Cureton in Waxhaw. Know it's a LOT of info in all these responses and I wish you luck.
