Looking to Tutor
I'm interested in becoming a tutor to earn a little extra money. I have a masters in Economics, so I can tutor in math/stats/econ. But what I don't know is how to get started? Should I simply post something on craigslist and hope for the best, or is there a better way???

What age group will you provide services for? I live in Highland Creek. Our local neighborhood directory includes tutors. I know a few people who provide the services for elementary and middle school students.

there are companies that pay well for tutoring especially for SAT prep like Kaplan and whatnot. Some pay up to 25/hr depending on experience. Or you can just go word of mouth. Not a personal attack, but having an Economics degree does not qualify you to tutor math or statistics, unless you are talking about just tutoring middle/high school kids. In that case then like I said, just try one of those companies, craigslist like you said, or if you can get in with one family then they can just pass along the word. As a former teacher, I think personal tutors are becoming somewhat obsolete, as most teachers are more than willing to go before school or after school for one on one help. Even teachers that are not a specific students teacher are willing to help, as most departments work well together in that respect. Most parents hire outside tutors rather than seeking help through the school for free, b/c its their way of saying the teachers arent doing a good job rather than admitting its probably something their kids are doing wrong. I had parents blow up at me, then stick their heads up their asses when I told them how I was stood up at 6:30 am or after school by their kids for the extra help that I didnt HAVE to give them. Or even worse, the kids come to extra help and pretend like they understand everything just to get out of there, then end up failing the tests with an 11% when all they had to do was say "I still dont understand" and then we could have attacked it from a different angle. Anyways RANT OVER good luck. Tutoring can still pull you pretty decent money since those same parents are willing to pay upwards of 30 bucks an hour

You might try posting an ad at one of the schools in the area: UNCC, Queens, CPCC , Johnson and Wales or Johnson C. Smith. My son who is a mathematician made very good money one summer tutoring through UNCC. Before you post, however, ask permission at a student center or some other likely place. If you don't do this, someone will tear down your posts.

You also might want to try Hunington Learning Center or others that are similar to this one.
