Understood, check out the University area. For whatever reason some people thumb there nose at this part of town but it is actually nice (people in Charlotte view downtown as heaven, its okay). I believe it is the most populous and diverse (at least diverse for Charlotte) part of town and you can get to downtown in 10-15 minutes. Pineville which is in the southeast part of the Charlotte metro area isn't bad, it is on the opposite end of town (they are connected via 85 south to 77 south). Once again good luck

Are you willing to flip burgers or work at a grocery store?
You were lucky that the crazy person didn't live above you. You would never get any sleep. Been there, done that!

University area would be perfect. It you looked hard I am sure you could find something around $900. My good friend leases a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in a cute neighborhood for $875. Good Luck!

From the center of Charlotte it would take about 20 minutes to drive there assuming no traffic issues. It's right on the edge of the Charlotte suburbs.
