From where Providence Road and the 51 meet, is Providence really congested on the way up to uptown? On the way back? This is what maps.google.com tells me to take as an alternate - no highway route.

Yes, that is one of the main non highway routes most people take.

my recent route home is starting to get really conjested. so i'm trying to find new ways. it's so freakin' impossible to go around Pineville though. there are NO roads on the west side accept for Hwy-51. I work uptown and here's my route.
Tryon all the way South to Arrowood. Cut over to 77 South. Get off on Westinghouse (grrr.... i hate this intersection!). Take Westinghouse East to Downs Rd (South). Turn on Hwy-51, take that into Pineville ... however this road has been backed up non-stop for the last month. It's either sit there in traffic, or sit on I-485 in traffic. Both is bad.

what route i posted above is my evening commute. i leave uptown/south end about 5:10pm. in the mornings i take I-485 to 77N. it's not nearly as bad in the morning as it is in the evenings w/ the reverse traffic.

That's what my dad was saying. He went down to check out our house at 12 on Saturday and he said both the 51 and the 485 were nutso for it being a Saturday. I was wondering why that would be. I thought only in CA that there was traffic at random times like that.

I think it may actual be normal now because we saw the 51 traffic on Saturday and the 485 traffic on Sunday after church. Luckily we weren't going on those roads, but they were both pretty bad. It will get worse as the holidays get closer especially around the mall.
