you can walk in the door at almost any insurance company or financial services firm and find a job.
where'd you hear that? With high security now of days and everything being passed from party to party with nameless HR people I dont see how that is possible to just "walk in" and find a job. If it is, please tell me where? The Hartfords campus (i call it campus b/c at least in CT there was 5 different buildings spread out throughout their property almost like a section of a college campus) is like an impenetrable fortress lol
It takes longer for them to interview down here. I am also from the North and have learned that it can take one, two or three months to get an interview. I am not kidding because it happened to me. They are slow down here!!!!

Thank you for helping hit the nail on the head. That's pretty much what I was getting at. Of course the market hasn't completely dried up (the water supply may, not the job market) but it's the polar opposite from waltzing down and thinking that you're a shoe in for a position.
ibad281, hopefully your wife won't be in the line of fire of the impending BoA cuts due to today's news.
Of course BofA's profits are down. They pissed everyone off with their $3 ATM surcharge announcement, their subpar off-shored customer service, and credit cards for illegal aliens. Do they think they can survive like that?

It was more to do with their investment banking unit:
Quote:
Lewis said he is taking a hard look at the investment banking unit, which provides Wall Street-style services such as bond offerings, trading and merger advice. The probability of eliminating some “businesses and infrastructure” is “very high,” Lewis told analysts on the call.
Asked how quickly the bank could start reducing its “infrastructure,” Lewis responded: “You would start immediately.”
I am a northern transplant, but have been here for 20 years I would suggest with your accounting background that you might want to consider taking one of the H&R Block Tax classes and then you will be in a good position in the December timeframe to approach tax offices.
After just going through a job transition myself, my suggestion would be to ask around for the name of a reputable accountant in the Huntersville area. Ask your neighbor or someone. Then call the acct and let them know you were referred by someone - and explain in a positive light how you are currently looking for an accounting position and what you have to offer. (Do NOT comment on anything negative with your search). Let them know you were reaching out to see if maybe they knew of any biz that might be in need of your skills or if they might have any networking recommendations for you. (acct chapter meetings etc.) Maybe they will personally try to help you with the connections they have in the area.
One thing I will say about the difference in the dialogue between the North and the south and that is .. that sometimes southerns misinterprete the "northern tone" or "speaking to the point" to be abrupt when the person speaking may not have intended. No wrong on either part - just a difference in talking style. But it can be misinterpreted. So I would be cognizant of that in your discussions.
Hi Bambam07, I moved to NC from AZ last October. My advice is to stay in contact each week with the employment agencies in Charlotte. And absolutely accept contract work, even if it's only for a month; it's always easier to get a job when you already have one. Also, apply for accounting jobs that may not necessarily be a match for your qualifications. You just never know; they might promote someone from within for that specific job and back-fill the promotee's job with you. That is exactly what happened to me ! To be specific, since we both work in accounting, I applied for a job that required experience in SEC reporting, even though I had none. They promoted someone from within and gave me her old job, which was never even advertised. So just try to get your name out there. Last bit of advice, if you're looking for a "survival" job to pay the bills, just tell them you are a student and don't mention your accounting job history. If you do, they'll know you're not going to stay. For those BS kind of jobs, all they do is a felony background check anyways. Call the local grocery store managers and I guarantee one of them will need a night time shelf stocker for 8.50 an hour. And it would leave your days open for interviews. We all have to do what we have to do sometimes- I've been there! But there's no reason to worry about being homeless in the US of A. Good luck to you.
