Just getting back into Kayaking and I am really new to the area... Today I went out to Lake Norman, which was very pretty and the water was like a hot tub! I've also gone to the Catawba River right off of Mt.Holly-Huntersville Rd?, but that was a total dump (sorry, but it was pretty nasty).... Looking for clearer waters; is that possible around this area or do I have to go outside of the city?

You could check out Moss Lake. It's the reservoir for City of Kings Mountain. I'm not sure if non residents have to pay a fee. You could check with the city.

Mountain island lake, below lake Norman, is pretty good. Not quite as hectic.

You might want to try the New River, up near Sparta. Couple hours from Charlotte but an easy drive and great yakkin water.

Catawba down in Rock Hill. There are several spots where you can put in. The Riverwalk is a nice spot.

Tons of kayakers at white water center. It is not too far from mountain island lake and it would be well worth your time to see. Socially, being new to the area, it would also provide lots of people with your outdoor interest if you're looking for that.

Go up Beatties Ford road, big launch area. I have been gone awhile but it was clean. I suggest getting on the water by 6:00am, off by 9:30 or so. We used to say, "when the cartoons were over, the jet skis came out."

Good luck
