I am moving to the Charlotte area soon and have a question regarding traffic on I-485. I have seen many posts discussing how awful traffic is on the inner loop going towards I-77 in the morning and on the outer loop going towards Ballantyne and Matthews in the afternoon. My question is what is traffic like if your commute takes you in the opposite direction? Specifically, if I need to take the outer loop from Matthews to the Harrisburg and Concord areas in the morning and the inner loop back to Matthews in the late afternoon/early evening, will I still get hit by a ton of delays? Thanks in advance for the input!

The upper loop you are taking from Matthews to Concord for now doesnt have traffic issues.

No issues- I'd love that commute.

Depending on where in Matthews and where in Concord, it can still be about 40-45 minutes without traffic, which isn't exactly a short commute, but as the other posters have said there really aren't any traffic issues going that way. The only spot which may be a problem at times is I-85 which can be a bit unpredictable mainly due to the current construction.

I drive the outer loop in the morning and the inner in the evening and traffic is generally a lot less clogged than if I were going the other way.

That said, how "bad" your commute will be really depends on your concept of rush hour traffic based on where you lived now. Having lived in the DC/Baltimore area before moving here a few years back, the traffic has never seemed as bad as it was in my former hometown.
