hello, I came across this forum and it is so insightful. So hear it goes: I am looking to make a move to the Charlotte, NC area to start fresh. Been through some rough times and now I am ready to live life. I would like to this this within 5 months or so. I am a single mom with two daughters who by the way will be graduating in the time frame I spoke of moving. See I would love to be in an area that is not too loud, too country; but not directly in the city per say . I would like a 2 bedroom: either apt. or house for rent, privately own rentals are okay also; not ready to buy. My price ranges up to $850. know it might be said probably that's not reasonable, but I am just starting out and over. Need some help. Also I am looking for positions in administrative assistant/clerical jobs. I have been doing some research but I need some extra help. Hope someone can help/assist me in my new endeavor.
Okay, lets try this again. It deleted my post originally.
Hi there,
I moved here last March and absolutely love it! I live in South Park area of Charlotte and pay in your range for a two bedroom; however, I did get a good deal for this area. It can be done! This neighborhood is a lot of single family homes & condos with a few apartment buildings. It is family friend, but is not a walkable neighborhood like some neighborhoods in Charlotte are. I live 6 miles south of the downtown (or Uptown area as it's called here) area. Traffic isn't bad and follows an actual pattern: heavy towards uptown in the morning and heavy leaving in the evening. Coming from Chicago & Los Angeles this is a cake walk.
In regards to the job world I cannot help there. I moved here knowing the city was actively hiring in my area and it still took me several months. From others here I've gathered it is actually about being at the right place at the right time opposed to the what you know/who you know way.
If you have any specific questions about where I live or anything else feel free to private message me. Overall, I am very happy here and love Charlotte as a city. Two years ago I couldn't imagine living outside a major city, let alone in "the south" but I've developed a great appreciation for it. Funny how things change!

PS: I am so ready
Find a job first, and you can base where you live on where you will work. Doing that incorrectly could cost you an extra hour a day each way.

This can't be right..
Everyone says it's impossible to find a safe apartment for less than $1100 in Charlotte.
Apartment pricing is better in the older complexes, without fitness/pool amenities or washer dryers in the units. Or if you're willing to live somewhere other than south Charlotte.

You are right, but even the older (and nice) communities are taking full advantage of the renters boom and raising rates like crazy. I have a friend in an older (built in 1985), fairly nice apt complex not far from Southpark. His rent went up $50 a month last year and was just told it will going up $100 per month if he signs his new lease in March. That would still put him at $849 for a 1br, compared to $1000 per month for some of the newer 1br apts.
The current apt boom, like anything, is cyclical. I remember back in the mid-90's when apts landlords would go to great lengths to sign you up, or keep you as a tenant. Now, it is not the case. I predict things will stabilize and people can start finding deals on apts again in another 3-5 years. Especially now that so many apts are currently under construction here, and the 2, 23 story apt towers announced for uptown last week. Charlotte will soon be overbuilt in apts, just like it was back in the 90's.
I lived in a 2 bedroom 2 bath in ballantyne for $850...now this was a year and 1/2 ago though.....!! Walked everywhere on Rea so that was cool!
