Default AT&T U-Verse Internet Issues - Download Speeds

We have AT&T U-Verse bundled for Internet, TV, and phone. We have the 12mbps Internet download package, which would normally mean a download speed somewhere close to that on any given minute or day.

Our download speed is running anywhere from 0.65 up to 11.65 Mbps. Simply stated - our download speed is all over the range, using speedtest.net and speakeasy.net sites to measure download and upload speeds.

After an hour with customer no-support, using multiple computers to establish a benchmark for our system, the person on the other end said she is sending a new (probably refurbished) gateway (modem).

Is anyone on this forum who has U-Verse having or has had the same issues with download speeds all over the range?

I'd reverse that or call it a router. It's not really a modem unless common use has overridden the original definition like how we got irregardless which means exactly the same thing as regardless.

Hope you get your speed issue fixed. I have the benefit of an HOA member Facebook page so it's easy to get feedback that is very local. There were issues with UVerse, AT&T DSL and TW last week with UVerse outages being the worse. That wasn't a speed issue though.

Indeed, you are correct. It is a router. I just bought into the trade terminology, i.e., "gateway" or "modem". I think I have a modem gathering dust in my stash somewhere in the house.

After all is said and done and on my own, I moved my wireless adapter from one USB port to another and bingo, the speed went back to what it should be or close to the 12Mbps. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error when all else fails. I'll be letter ATT know my solution when they call back today for the follow up on the new router.

Thanks!

Sometimes it's the simple things. We should have recommended testing with a direct ethernet connection.
