Eastland Mall is still in pretty good shape. There are some minor leaks in the roof but the interior is in decent condition. I was inside both Sears & Dillards this evening looking for the source of two pipes spewing water on the outside of the mall.

Good work! I have put out a ping to the press and some council members and sent an e-mail to the contract administrator.

Surely they aren't going to put out a contract so third parties start working on it if they aren't going to demolish it and know that for a fact.

But CO and TV crews were part of the dog and pony show last week giving peeps tours to decide what to do with it. Something doesn't match up and the lack of press coverage is deafening.

It's late as I write this so maybe I'll get lucky and hear something when I get up

Here's WFAE's report from the show and tell last week. Note it says that project ideas aren't due until May.

This is because it's a very rare day that we have anything approaching real investigative journalism in Charlotte these days. What we have instead is "access journalism" where news outlets afraid of offending officials, will report what is told to them as fact and without question. The days of muck raking journalists/reporters is, unfortunately, long gone.

If the Charlotte media had been doing it's job that it likes to pretend that it does, there would have been serious questions raised before the purchase went through. We did it here on city-data, us bunch of arm-chair amateurs, but yet, nothing in our media. Now what some of us said would happen has come to pass. i.e. The city paid $13M for a structure with the excuse they were the only ones who could assemble all the property so that a movie studio would get involved. Yet now that they did it, there is nothing and the place has to be torn down at great city expense.

The money used for the purchase, and likely the demolition, are coming out of a neighborhood bond passed back in 2008. Most of the money used for the other projects in bond are low cost, so the remaining balance are probably being used for the demo.

Are you sure about that?

I would like to be able to verify this. I don't think the taxpayers voted on that bond w/ the expectation that the money would go towards razing Eastland Mall.

I can't find anything online that verifies that bond money will be used for this purpose and would like to shine some light on it if that is, indeed, what will occur.

They used an unspent 2008 bond package that was voted in as general neighborhood improvement projects. The bond was for $15M. The people were led to believe it was for sidewalks, trees, parks, walking trails, etc. What people don't understand is a bond package is only an authorization to borrow money. It is not a requirement the money be used. Unfortunately people vote for these things and they are so nebulously worded they can be use for anything.

This is new debt for the city. Now that most of this bond has been used the city will have to start servicing the debt and an principle payback. This comes right out of the general fund generated by property taxes.

Well if the site is demolished isn't it possible this is what goes there?

Rather than recouping money by selling to a developer?

If it does become one big ole park, where's the money for that coming from?
