Does CMS pay for health benefits for a teacher's family? I saw on the Union County website that the employee can elect to pay for benefits for their family.... Will CMS cover that cost?

They don't pay for benefits for the family, but you can add them as dependents and have deductions taken out of your check. I don't think any school district will pay for benefits for your family.

And dental is not covered for even the employee. You can elect to have dental insurance. I know it is a $22 deduction for a single person, I have no idea for the family.

Family coverage for dental state wide is about $150 a month for expanded coverage. I do not have the paperwork in front of me, but they taken mandatory pension portion out of your pay too. I don't think any district covers the family for free. In my opion, the BCBSNC could be much better. I loved my previous insurance nad got dumped into this with the job change. Good Luck.

CMS does not pay for health benefits for anyone except the employee. Employees can elect to pay for the additional health coverage. It definitely is not cheap. When I left CMS in 2005 they had also tossed out the HMOs and offered only their only State Insurance [Blue Cross] which had higher co-pays and less coverage.

By the way many soon to be CMS teachers may not realize that CMS teachers are only paid 10 out of 12 months. For me this was devastating because as a single parent, I had to begin almost every school year, one mortgage payment behind because I barely made enough to cover my expenses during the school year. Thank God, I now teach for system that pays its teachers 12 months a year and about 12,000 more a year. I can't believe how different my life is now.

And what school system is that? Is it here in NC or did you move?

I now teach in Atlanta. Atlanta also seems to be the first stop for teachers leaving the Floriday system.

The state credit union will set up a two month payment plan (which is just what CMS used to do). Union County still pays 12 months.

they don't offer a 12 month payment schedule, but they still get about the same salary per year as teachers in districts here who are on the 12 month schedule since its a stae pay scale. i think union county teachers can choose a 10 or 12 month payment schedule. with 10 month you have to budget your money to last the summer.

From some of the teachers I've talked to, covering a spouse runs either $300 or $350 a month for the ten months you're working. For the whole family, it is about $650 a month for the 10 months. Charlotte and NC in general, is not exactly generous when it comes to benefits!
