Ok, people. I was at Northlake yesterday as I often am to pick up items at Macy's. I saw police patrolling the lot, all was calm and fine. Police are called to ALL malls for theft and fights between kids. Carolina Place in Pineville has had it's share, Concord's small mall, Concord Mills.....I really get mad when people call it the new "eastland." That's an unacceptable comparision. Eastland went under because the socio-economics surrounding that area declined. Northlake is a nice area but has suffered from theft like ALL of Charlotte (personal property theft is up 19% over last year in the city).

I'm just trying to find a nice home for me and my family. We don't want to steal anything...

hahahahaha - I'm sure you don't! So, you are thinking of private school for your kids? I would then suggest you look for homes out by the school off of Rocky River Road, but just on the other side of I485 into the next county - Cabarrus county.

I am going to start a new thread about what Charlotte should be doing to protect itself from abandoned retail centers and empty big boxes. Many cities have already passed legislation of this sort.
About Northlake mall. I've never been there and so can not personally attest to any problems that may exist there, but I have heard from some very reliable sources that there are problems - at least in the evening. About Eastland: the situation is not as clearcut as NCISGREAT states. It's very complicated and involved many players including the city government. It's not clear which decline came first: the mall or the area. I just wanted to warn you folks who live and shop near there to be on your guard and to closely monitor legislation that deals with malls and big boxes. East Charlotte was sleeping!!!!! |

I am taking it from somebody who has personally seen it decline. My gf is one of the most honest people you would ever meet. She would not make this stuff up. |

As someone who saw the Hickory Grove Rd area go from lovely middle class homes to me having to dodge used needles on sidewalks, I can assure you that the area declined prior to the mall. The mall followed suit as the clientele changed as a result of the area changing. The city and county did not get involved until stores like Sharon Luggage and others pulled out as a result of the clientele change causing poor revenue. Quote:
Birkdale Village is lovely and upscale and has had massive problems with kids stealing and hanging out as well as causing vandalism. Stop signs in the neighborhood were torn down, a bit of spray paint, and lovely instances of sex (used condoms left behind) in the neighborhood playground. But those incidents should not characterize the place as dangerous or "ghetto" should it? It happens everywhere. I just don't think that comparing Northlake to Eastland at this juncture is appropriate or accurate. |

I believe it was more complicated than that. The city played a major role in the change of clientele. I still want to warn the folks who live and shop near Northlake Mall to be on their guard and to closely monitor legislation that deals with malls and big boxes. East Charlotte was sleeping!!!!! |

I am not going to hijack this thread, but immigration caused a big influx of people to that area, crime escalated as those people (who carry a lot of cash) became crime victims. The area declined, thus the clientele of the mall changed. I was there you were not. I also go to Northlake regularly, you do not. So why are you even participating so heavily in this discussion? Discussion closed unless another thread is created. |
