Looking to relo from CT to Charlotte area. I work for Aetna and would like to be within 30 mins to the Charlotte office. Our kids are older and don't need to worry about grammar schools. I have one left in HS, but not sure if we will move before he graduates. Looking for a newer home, NOT in a "community" where we have to abide by mail box colors etc. but we don't want to be rural. I am a people person and will want to meet our neighbors. Would like to be close to a gym, retail shopping and grocery stores. Would like a decent size lot - 1 acre...is that possible without being rural? What areas do you suggest?

People can give you better advice if you tell us which part of Charlotte the office is in & what your budget range is.

I recommend you look at Davidson, NC. It is north of Charlotte.

Sure there are places out there (depending on your budget). Look around (you can use realtor.com and search lot size).

We are going to look at a home for sale today off of Rae Rd (north of 51) that sits on 1.3 acres. Considering you are moving from CT, I would assume most home prices here wouldn't scare you off.

OP has seems to have some conflicting requests. Many newer homes will be in a "community," and in terms of Davidson, many of the homes actually in the heart of town (if that's even what OP wants) won't be newer. In Davidson, there may not be a ton of choices on 1+ acre. I just did a search and see only 20 active listings in Davidson on 1+ acre. OP didn't say their budget but these start at $400K and go up from there, and it looks like a bunch of them are not near the heart of Davidson.

Also, according to google the Aetna office is in Ballantyne, but don't know if that's accurate. If so, not sure if maybe Matthews would work.

I agree with the post suggesting Davidson - I think that'd be a smart choice to start given the details that the OP has provided. Also, I lived in Concord, which is on CLT's northeast border. It's a great town with a lot to offer on its own (in addition to being CLT's neighbor and having those resources as well). I would say that right at the border (near exit 49) might not be what you're looking for since its very developed, but up along Weddington Road, which heads north, there are nice pockets of housing that do not feel too uniform but are nice neighborhoods - roughly 30 mins from Uptown.

Who would want to commute from Davidson to Ballantyne?

The original post didn't mention where the offices were. Had I known , I might not have suggested areas north of the city. That said, I do know of folks who made that commute - might not be work the traffic headache for most people, but the communities were worth it to them. So some people do in fact chose that.

To the OP, check out Matthews - it's got a lot going for it, too. Best of luck and congrats on your exciting move.
