Some people are more sensitive to brown recluse bites than others, similar to bee stings and other insect bites. I had very similar experience - was bit 4 - 5 times on my lower leg. The first bite was the biggest where most he venom was injected the others were smaller - swollen, red - had heat that went up my leg and the whole calf area hurt to walk or do anything. It did finally get better and heal perfectly fine. No tissue damage. I was fortunate that I wasn't that sensitive to them - even though it hurt and was very painful, I was lucky.
But it is important to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get worse.
Brown Recluse are common in Kansas. The like cool, damp places and reclusive - but if they are threatened will bite - or stuck in your pant leg. I have seen a brown recluse that was quite large - although most are smaller. It was in a display and it was bigger than a quarter in dimension.
Definitely have an exterminator come out and check/spray the crawl space. In rare cases houses here have become infested so bad they are deemed unlivable and the house is condemned. This happened to a friend of mine's lake house - they weren't there enough to notice how bad it was getting. I doubt your's is that bad, but it is something that definitely needs addressed especially with children and pets around. Children are smaller and will the effect of the bite will more than likely be worse.
My cousin's son was bite around his private parts by one and was in the hospital for several days and had to be put in one of those oxygen machines for awhile. Ever since, he has been more sensitive than the rest of the family to insect bites and has an allergic reaction to bee stings.
