The state is suing Charlotte-based Duke Energy for polluting Mountain Island Lake with coal ash, the first time North Carolina has taken action against a utility for its handling of the substance. The lake is a main drinking supply for Charlotte.

This explains the proposed 7% rate hike

Too bad it takes a lawsuit these days for a corporation to be forced into doing the right thing...
It is not about the money, it is about getting top management (board) to approve the expense of moving the toxic ash to a dry storage - thing that should've been done before...

Quote:
...“The question is why Duke Energy isn’t willing to clean up its pollution and move its toxic coal ash to a lined, dry storage now, before even more contamination pollutes the water and sediments of Mountain Island Lake.”

A similar lawsuit by the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation and SELC against South Carolina utility SCE&G was settled last year when the utility agreed to move all 2.4 million tons of coal ash from its unlined Wateree Station lagoons to a lined landfill.
I cannot help but think that if not for the political clout, polluting should've never been an option...

Just like when sports teams and companies threaten to leave if they don't get increased state money.

If you hire people who have never earned their way in life to dictate(politicians and government workers strait out of college their parents paid for), don't expect effective decisions..

Wonder why our past mayor didn't go after the offender?I think polluting our rivers is a terrible thing to let happen.Look at what is going on in china and india...Their rivers are toxic soups and our Mountain Island lake has arsenic levels 200 times above the safe limits in the ground sediment under the water along with other toxic poisons and heavy metals....I am a boater and am almost afraid to even put my boat in there now..............and eating the fish from the lake might kill you or give you cancer...GREAT JOB DUKE POWER.......

Charlotte have been adamant that the water was safe to drink.
The Catawba River keeper was about to sue Duke but the state stepped in.
They've known about the pollution for years. The Catawba River basin is one of the most endangered in the US.

Welcome to the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation

The Catawba River has been designated as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers three times (#1 in 2008, as well as #5 in 2013 and #13 in 2000). In addition, the River's listing on the Top Ten Endangered Places in the Southeast (by the Southern Environment Law Center in 2010 and 2012), its listing as the 4th most stressed river in the United States (by the Union of Concerned Scientists in 2011) and recent fish advisories for unsafe levels of metals and PCBs highlight the need to do more to protect our water.

According to the press release from the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, Mountain Island Lake is the source of drinking water for more than 8.6 million people in the Charlotte area, including city residents.

Didn't know the charlotte area was that large.

Here's what the website says.

Two of EPA's High Hazard Coal Ash Impoundments are located on Mountain Island Lake upstream from the primary water intakes for approximately 860,000 people in Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Mt. Holly and Gastonia.

860,000 is not 8.6 million.
