According to FBI City Crime Rankings 2013 cities of 500,000 or more population, Charlotte is rank #8 in lowest crime category.

I do not know their methology in how they gather data or what is included

Here is the chart. (pdf file) http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2012...sFactSheet.pdf

Anecdotally, my perception is that crime has dropped across Charlotte.

A couple of years back I was teaching in CLT in the area between Atando and NoDa. As I was driving to work one day, I heard a report on WFAE which stated that that particular area (specifically between Atando and NoDa) had been ranked one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. I remember being struck by hearing this: while this neighborhood certainly was an under-resourced part of the city and had higher crime than the rest of the region, I never felt as though I was working in one of the most dangerous places in the country. It always had the feeling of being a transitional community to me. Since then, it’s been taken off these lists and I’m glad to see that CLT in general is becoming a safer city.
