I still don't get it.

Charlotte is redeveloping land in Uptown, to areas close to Uptown (e.g. South End), yet they're building density in a way that's still car dependent.

Example: you live in Uptown (Downtown) CLT, and you want to go to a book store, or music store. There aren't any in Uptown. I don't know that there are any department stores Uptown. This means you have to drive somewhere - making the city car dependent.

I like a lot of what I see: there's great promise with the new Stadium, and Romare Bearden's park looks to be a masterpiece.

But I just read a couple of articles about new apartment development in Uptown (which I applaud); yet first story space will be allocated to parking facilities.

This makes for an area with a lot of tall buildings, with no ambiance; no "soul."

Why no first floor retail?

The two examples that you cited (Book stores and music stores) are the two kinds of stores that have been bleeding brick and mortar locations the past few years. You won't see either of these open uptown.

The Bookmark just closed in Founders Hall because they couldn't compete with ebook sales.
