Its pretty rural out that part of Gaston County, are you planning to call it home and commute to Charlotte, or work in Gastonia area?
If you have kids I would check out the schools- you want to keep them out of any gastonia schools.
Don't rule out some of the other towns in Gaston though, they are all very similar. Spencer Mountain (cool views), Stanley (lowest city tax I believe), Dallas, etc. I live in North Belmont right now, and Belmont overall is kinda pricey for new construction. The house I just bought is in Mount Holly, another cool town with less than 10,000 people, more affordable there.
I'm from Florida originally like yourself. I definitely appreciate the landscape out here, its not overdeveloped and metropolitan like Charlotte so the hills are more noticeable, and you gottalove the winding rural roads. The entire county is predominantly natives, unlike the rest of the Charlotte area. The people are very blue collar, very southern, for the most part very courteous and hospitable, its just taken some getting used to people taking a long time to finish a sentence! Its a slower pace out here. I would imagine people from New York or Jersey can move to Charlotte (I met plenty of them while I lived there) and not feel horribly out of place, but here they would.
Hope that helps. PM me if you have any questions, if I'm capable of answering them I'll sure try.

I was raised in Gastonia (parents still live there). Ranlo is more "small town" than rual, as its city limits bump up against other towns in each direction (Gastonia to the west and south, Spencer Mnt. to the north, and Lowell to the east). Cute little town trying to reinvent itself. I think Ranlo would feed in to some not-so-desirable schools. The schools in SE Gastonia are good, but the rest of the city, the schools are pretty questionanable. But what fromcenfl said is true. To me, it may be geographically the most beautiful county in the Charlotte area (lakes to the east, mountains to the west). We lived in Belmont for 6 years and loved it. Mt. Holly/Stanly is a little more afforable and really nice. But property taxes in Gaston County are the highest in the Charlotte area. But homes themselves are less than most places in the metro area. All in all, it's a good area. Good luck!!!

Ranlo
Hi,
We are looking to buy a new home and have found one that we really like in Ranlo. I am also a teacher, and our kids would be going to a Christian school where I am looking to teach. Are there any parks/places for kids to play? I also heard that the mall there is closing (the one on Cox Rd. @ the Ranlo exit). I'd love any additional info that anyone has! Thanks

You dont want to come to Ranlo. Our sewer system stinks all the time.Dallas is a very good town.I love their schools. They have elementary, middle and high school.Ranlo is getting a new school in 2014.We have only 1 road to enter and exit our town.We are hoping when we get school built they will widen road.Pretty sure they will. The reason I live in Ranlo is my husband was from here.We do have one of the best police departments they are.Our chief is number 1.So come and visit sometime.
