Can anyone suggest a good HVAC contractor to do a Manual J Load Calculation before replacing systems? A family member wants to replace his old (approx. 20 yrs.) system and get two systems (one for each floor) to improve the home's comfort. I suggested looking at two-stage systems, since in my experience they do a better job controlling excess humidity, and making sure that the systems aren't so big that they short cycle. In my area, contractors tend to oversize systems to achieve fast cooling but the humidity levels aren't reduced. The house probably needs new ducts, too. If the budget will stand it, they may consider an AccuClean or AprilAire 5 in. media filter, too.
Also, if anyone knows a good insulation contractor, please share that info, too. There's a bonus room over the garage that probably needs better insulation both above and below.
He can also contact Duke if they supply his electricity. They have a free in home service of calculating that but I don't know if it's specifically the Manual J. And then he can compare that to any estimate/calculations the companies he contacts. I have heard good things on the repair side but not sure on new installation about Charlotte Heating and Air Conditioning - MTB Mechanical
