Hello. My family is relocating to Charlotte next month and we will be working uptown. Please let me know what realistic (please, no "best day scenarios") commute times will be up town from the following location:

Matthews (inside 485)
Tega Cay (Lake Shore)
Providence Plantation
Piper Glen

Also very interested in opinions on the schools and family-friendly benefits to living in each of those places.

As always, thank you for your candid feedback!

Where in particular in uptown? Not so much the building but the general cross streets. The answers will vary.

I can say that if you are in uptown off of 16/Providence, Providence Plantation and Piper Glen, it will be about 30 minutes straight up Providence road from Hwy 51 if it's a decent rush hour. Double if there is an accident or rain etc. In no traffic, it's about 15-20 minutes. Piper glen has a few entrances/exits. If you are off the first entrance from the 485 side going toward 51, it's a bear to make a left there to use the highway. Especially in rush hour. But if you are taking 51 and Providence/Park/Johnston, you are fine as you will be making a right.

Matthews (inside 485) - commute is 45-1h
Tega Cay (Lake Shore) - commute is 30-40
Providence Plantation - commute is 40-45
Piper Glen - commute is 40-45

All of those areas are nice, with good schools. Tega Cay is in SC though, so keep that in mind (tags, insurance for car etc).

I recommend SE Gastonia/Belmont/Cramerton also. 30-40 min commute, excellent area/schools. I do not know how old your kids are, but here is the new high school in Cramerton, http://www.mbaj.com/gcs/ 9-10th grade starts this year, then next they will bring in 11 and 12. This school rivals Audrey Kell in my opinion. VERY nice.

I agree overall with Sloante's estimates. I have been watching thread and thinking that I would allow 45 mins for all the areas, myself. Now, sometimes, it takes us 35 mins, but I always allow 45 b/c of traffic variables, finding parking space, etc. I tend to err on the "too much time" side.

I did it for a year to an office right on providence/16. Straight up and slightly to the left. Don't ever want to again though. Lol and most mornings it was 30 minutes.

"...to an office right on providence/16." That's not uptown. It's not far off 45-60 minutes but there's no way you can get there in a half hour. I've been trying for over a decade.

I drive from Stonecrest to uptown daily. Have tried staying on Rea Rd/Colony and then turning into downtown, or 51 and providence. It doesn't matter... it will take you approx. 45 mins, in moderate traffic. If it rains, count on it being over 1 hour easy.

Good luck.

I can drive Park Rd at 7:30am and get downtown to the Carillon Building in 35 minutes. I live near Carmel Commons. If it rains then leave earlier.
