Hi,
I am researching on Wesley Chapel, NC area, and noticed few worrying reviews on greatschools. Something about 60 kids that joined as a part of title 1 program - can anyone explain what it is? Does the same program exists / affects Weddington Elementary, Marvin Elementary, additional elementary schools in Union county school district? What about CMS?
How title 1 affects overall school rating in the long run?
Thank you!

Children from extremely bad schools (title one schools) were formerly given the option if attending a different school.

That option no longer exists, but children already in are grandfathered.

Thank you Native_Son! By no longer exist - you mean there are no newcomers under title 1 program? When and for how long the option to attend was on the table?
The review is March 2012, so I assume 2011-2012 school year the program was still ongoing..

Do you know if the option exists in other Union County Elementary schools, or it was discontinued overall?

Many thanks!

I live close to this school, and while my children go to another, I've only heard great things about it. It's a large school, so if this bothers you, remember that it's really not that many children. It wouldn't bother me though. These are kids whose parents cared enough to send them somewhere else, and I think that can't be a bad thing (unless I wrongly understand the program).

You're absolutely correct.

I live in a title one school district. We used our "out" option to attend a better school and our child is a wonderful student!

I used to live near there and I too heard great things about that school. Plus that isn't a lot of students when there are over 500 kids at that school. I do love the area though, you would be making a great choice all around there.

Thank you for taking the time and explaining this to me, plus sharing the links. My initial understanding was that underperforming students are transferred, I completely misunderstood the purpose of this program.
Overall Wesley Chapel Elementary seem like an excellent choice, thank you for reassurring me!

As for the program - it was discontinued in order to make sure title 1 schools are improving on their own, with the proper funds - or there is another program in place? What parents in similar to yours situation do now (besides sending the kids to private school)?
I am very interested to know since we passed on couple of amazing houses due to low rating on greatschools..

Thank you for your help!

Title I qualification is based on the percentage of students that receive free and reduced lunch. A Title I school receives more funding and more support staff.

The transferring of students had to do with NCLB and test scores- it nothing to do with Title I status.

My school qualified for Title I in 2008, after the economy went south. We are a far better school for it. The resources we've purchased with the funding we acquired would have taken us a decade if we were not Title I.

All children enrolled in an "opt out" school before the waivers were passed are grandfathered in. The kids in the system will all age through the system and won't be replaced.

I'm not sure why the waivers were granted. Probably expense. It's a dagger for some of the gentrifying urban areas because those choices were what made city life doable for an educated family with children.

I could go on a rant about the whole system but I will spare you my righteous indignation, lol.
