My family is looking to move to an area with good schools and low crime rate. It'd hopefully be a place where we can stay for a good long time -- at least long enough to raise the kids. Right now we live in Charlotte, but we'd really like to get out of Mecklenburg county if possible. We don't want to go too far, though, since my husband works in uptown.

We're considering Belmont, Fort Mill, and Highland Creek area (Cabarrus side). They are in our price range (200K-250K) and we've driven around all three and gotten a good vibe. I have heard mixed things about Belmont, though...are the schools on par with Fort Mill and Highland Creek? Seems like the crime rate is a little higher? I've also noticed that Highland Creek has a large number of homes for sale, including some foreclosures. Not sure if that's something to consider.

Any input about any of these three areas? We'd appreciate any info!

A new high school is being built to serve Cramerton & part of Belmont. There might be a bit of Mt Holly included. This is the website. New High School for Gaston County

Check the police crime map for Gaston County. Crime is pretty much concentrated in the NW corner of Gastonia.

You can't go wrong with the schools on the Cabarrus side of Highland Creek. Highland Creek is a good neighborhood to live in. I know several people that live in various parts of it. I haven't heard them complain.
