I know someone who I've been told is very good. (I know him as a person not as a teacher.) He lives in Matthews. If this interests you, PM me with your email and I'll put you in touch with him.
Have you tried Youtube? There are a bunch of videos that show you how to play a variety of things. You can select a song and most likely there is someone that has a video on it. The internet is more convenient than lessons, you can replay over and over and over again.
I would suggest getting a cord book and learning cords and Youtube.com for the rest.
I'm not sure what part of Charlotte or the area you live in but I highly recommend John Gurske.
He teaches at the The Academy of Fine Arts at 4519 Providence Road.
A little background: About 5 years ago our church (which has a very strong music program) became concerned about CMS cutting music programs in lower grades. We felt that music and the arts are very important to student's mental and academic development. So we started "The Academy" at our church. What began as a project to teach kids the fundamentals of music and art has grown into a full blown school. Kids from 4-84 now are students in all kinds of "stuff."
John is one of the 2 guitar instructors. You can contact them through the website Academy of Fine Arts or call 704-366-0199.
since i live in elizabeth, i think i'm going to give queens university's music academy a try (and also because they're the cheapest i've seen).
as far as using youtube/books, i'll definitely be doing that. but since i have absolutely no music knowledge whatsoever, i thought it would be worth the investment to at least get some lessons to get started. and by using queens, it will force me to go to lessons every week for 4 months.
if anyone has any other suggestions or knows of teachers, please let me know. if things don't work out at queens, i'll definitely be in contact with other teachers.
