Lake Norman Area
We are a retired couple living in NJ and are thinking of relocating to the Lake Norman area. We're looking in the $300-400K range, and mainly concerned about taxes and crime. We currently have waterfront property in NJ and would like to continue in NC. Anyone have any opinions as to where or not where we should look?? Thanks for any assistance, y'all!! Bud & Janice
Perhaps I should add, being retired we don't care about commutes, or schools for that matter. We also ride a Harley and love to have open, scenic, light traffic roads nearby where we can ride. Also we'd rather not be "packed in" to a neighbor. We love people, but like space too!!

You won't get a home in that price range on the Mecklenburg or Iredell County side, unless you buy a condo. If you'd like a home with a yard, try looking in Catawba and Lincoln counties. Lower taxes for sure. You shouldn't worry about crime in the Lake Norman area--it's virtually crime free.

Any where there is water is nice. You will find lower taxes in Iredell county, Lincoln county, just to name a few. It will be hard to be on the water for that price. You might be able to get a water view or definitely communities with boatslips.
There are alot of areas that you could look at. A lot of new construction. Also depends on how remote you want to be. The more north west you go the more remote but it is beautiful country up there.

I'm sure it's a typo for Lincoln Co., but Lincolnton is not near LKN...lol.
Main towns to consider would be Denver, Sherrill's Ford, and Troutman. Troutman is in Iredell, but further up river away from expensive development in Mooresville.

You may want to also look at the Lake Wylie area. It includes Southwest Charlotte (edge of Steele Creek area), Tega Cay and Lake Wylie in SC and a small part of Belmont in Gaston county (NC).

I do not know of any homes in that price range on the water. You may want to look at The Yachtsman and Emerald Point. These are 2 Condominium/Townhouse communities on the water (Lake Wylie). They are in Charlotte (area 7) if you want to do a search on them.

I just bought a house in Cornelius. It is a 1 1/2 story house about 2100 square feet. It has practically no lawn to maintain and is walking distance to everything. I paid less than 300K. The area is great and is about 1/2 mile from Lake Norman. This is all I wanted as I am in Europe during the summer and don't want a huge yard to maintain, etc. The opportunities for find a nice home in the Lake Norman area are excellent.

there are a couple of waterview homes in my neighborhood for sale, you MIGHT be able to score them for $400K, but for the most part they are in the mid $400s. There are a few empty lots for sale and you could probably build a custom home for under $400K. We are in Sherrills Ford on Lake Norman.

You will love the Lake Norman area but finding waterfront in your price range will virtually be impossible. Maybe but very doubtful.
ALso 'light traffic" doesn't go with the Lake Norman area!
GOOD LUCK!
